Slough Grammar School

Slough Secondary School was opened in 1912 - the first Secondary School in Slough. The original site
in William Street is now occupied by Thames Valley University. By 1936 the number of pupils had grown
considerably and it was decided to create two new schools. Slough High School for the girls was situated
in the west of the town in Twinches Lane, and Slough Grammar School for the boys, in the east of the town
at Lascelles Road.

In 1982 the boys' and girls' grammar schools were amalgamated. The new mixed grammar school, which
occupied what had until then been the boys grammar school site, was named "Upton.” Upton Grammar
School attained Grant Maintained Status in 1993 and the name was changed to "Slough Grammar School"
as a proud reminder of the strong academic traditions we uphold and of the town the School has served
since 1912.

The Latin motto on our School crest is "Ad Astra", which means "to the stars". Our motto has been a constant
inspiration and the School continues to provide a stimulating, positive and well-disciplined environment that
enables all pupils to achieve their full potential. Slough Secondary School was opened in 1912.

More than half of the UK’s world trade is with European countries. This makes language skills vital for the
country and for the pupils destined to become our future workforce. Recognising the potential and importance
of language skills, Slough Grammar School sought and achieved Language College status.

This is good news for our pupils and our community. Language College status brings additional funding to the
school, which strengthens our focus on teaching languages and developing deeper understanding of other cultures.

We have extended the range of languages taught and currently all students will learn at least two languages in
KeyStages 3 and 4. We offer ten languages to the lower school and twelve to the Sixth Form. Currently we
teach Far Eastern, Asian and European languages and intend to add Japanese in the near future. We have
extensive resources including books, CD ROMs, DVDs, videos, LCD flat screen computers and interactive
whiteboards. Pupils will work with specialist language teachers supported by Foreign Language Assistants.
They will form real and virtual links with language students elsewhere in Slough and in a variety of other countries.

As a Language College, we now provide language support to local schools and businesses. We are
passionate about promoting an international ethos and our work with our partners helps us in this.
It also helps us to develop the skills and understanding needed to play a constructive part in our
global future.
